Jan Hoffman has been an active Quaker for the past 40 years. Her primary interest has always been to be faithful to God's call on her life. In pursuing this interest, she has been helped by the particular Quaker understanding that the greatest faithfulness to God happens within a faith community where individual callings can be tested in a group. She is also helped by an Oversight Committee appointed by her local Quaker Meeting that meets with her monthly to help her find clarity on which individual calls to accept and to support her in pursuing them faithfully.
She has been called to speak, teach courses, write and lead workshops in North America and England. Sometimes no topic is given, and she speaks as led at the moment, preparing by discerning the spiritual state of the meeting to which she has been invited and speaking to that. Other times a topic is given and a frequent one is spiritual discernment--both discernment in one's personal life and discernment by a whole group on its own call. She finds endless fascination in the way the tension between individual integrity and group integrity can deepen the faith and the call of both.
